To Sell A Disc or Not To, That is the Question

I’ve received many emails from potential clients as well as clients themselves asking if I can put their session on a disc. I am here to address the question itself. 

What do I mean by a disc, first off?!?! 

To me, ‘selling a disc’ means selling (or including in your session) a disc of the final images from a session. These are fully edited and can either be in their full size format or sized to only be printed at a maximum of say a 10x13 or they can simply be web sharing sizes for Facebook or other social media sites. 

Do I give you a disc? That would be a negative ghostwriter. Do I sell a disc? You bet! Is it cheap? To some, heck no but to others it is nothing.  It’s not included in the session. Very rarely do I offer a session which include the disc, but it’s certainly an option for purchase.

There are benefits to selling a disc. 

It can be less work for the photographer. How hard can it be to put photos onto a disc? Not very.
The turnaround to the client is a lot faster for a very busy photographer as well as for the client.
The client can post the session from the disc on Facebook or any other social media site so their family and friends can see the photos. It also means the photographer will get great comments as well as possible clients from seeing those photos as well as their logo on their photo. 

There are downsides to selling a disc as well. 

And the drawbacks:

The photographer will lose all control of how his/her images are displayed. The client can go to the local Walmart or Walgreens to have them printed, or even worse, print them on their own home computer. This will result in terrible color, no matter how spot on the photographer's color is.
The photographer loses any further sale. Once you hand the disc over to the client, most likely you will not hear from that client again for prints or albums or anything else. 

When you purchase a disc, you will also receive a printing release, NOT a copyright release. 

I do, though, give the client a Proof disc. On this disc will be your photos from your session with PROOF displayed several times on the photo. Therefore, you can take your time looking at the disc to determine which photos you would like to purchase on print as well as put on your disc you are purchasing.

New Storyboard

I love playing around with new storyboards. Especially when I have the perfect photos to put in them.

Here is one I threw together with Orion's Easter portraits.

The blue frame was taken from the blue in his pants. This is just a darling storyboard and would be great as a 10x20 canvas on the wall.

Orion Easter 2011

Orion is a 19 month old ball of energy. After waking up from a nap and finding out he was running a fever, we  attempted photos. Of course, we didn't know at the time he had a fever. He would rather watch the planes fly over head or color on the sidewalk with some chalk.
He was great to photograph and the candid moments are my favorite.

Tennessee Wonders

The beauty of Tennessee lies in the surroundings. We recently traveled to Tennessee for a Spring Break family vacation. I have MANY photos still untouched but these are the ones that I am proud to show off just how beautiful Tennessee really is in March. 

Birds of Irish Fest 2011

These gorgeous "Raptors" made an appearance at the 2011 Irish Festival. There will be more of these birds to come, coming in May when I will be attending a "Raptor Event" where photographers come from all over just to snap photos of these beautiful winged creatures. 

Newborn Portfolio Building Mini Session

The Details: You will recieve a print credit which allows you to choose a free 8x10 or smaller (up to a $25 value), session fee is waived ($125 value) and you also receive 50% off all standard pricing for prints, canvases, digital file pricing, collection pricing and any other product offered by Photography By Teresa. Photography By Teresa will provide 10-15 uniques images for you to from. All newborn infants must be under 14 days of age.

In exchange you (the client) will sign a model release which allows Photography By Teresa to use the images from our Newborn Portfolio Building Mini Session for advertising purposes which will include but not limited to business cards, website, blog, flyers, and all other advertising which will be decided at Photography By Teresa's discretion.

You (the client) will be able to choose any image in the 10-15 unique images provided for your print credit and all of the 10-15 edited images will be available for purchase in print, canvas, collection or can be put together in a CD for an additional cost.

Just FYI: Photography By Teresa will be holding these mini session from April 1st until April 14th. The sessions will be 1-hour and I will accept no more than 3 sessions a day in studio or in the comfort of your own home (as long as it is no more than 20 miles from my studio)
